Richard Henry writes about Bootle New Strand in the eighties:

"I remember the "Strana" used to be closed on a Sunday but there where no doors. We used to go down on our bikes and get chased by the security guards.I remember the devils faces in the marble around the Hexegan.I remember the ill fated experiment that was "Triad Walks" and life before Addisons. The chilling wind whistling between the shops on a cold winters day.Life before McDonalds. The old cafe at T.J.s. The hardly ever open ice cream kiosk at Martins.buying Subbutio teams in Treasure Island. The bike shop next to the Kwik Save on Stanley Road.Anyone remember small fountains in the Stran? I would love to hear other visitors memories of the Strand and Bootle through the 70s & 80s.."

Damien from New Zealand also has memories of the Strand:

I have memories of the Strand from my childhood. I used to live down Hornby Road (just north of the Strand opposite the North Park. I remember the hexagon bit, it was the entrance we used. There was an army recruiting office upstairs - we used to go up and look at all the army posters in the window. Used to visit Ross (Rosses) fruit and veg shop down stairs not far from the Tescos. They used to have a cafe in there and had the best blackcurrent tarts in the world. (fact!) I remember the freezing wind blowing through the place too - it hadn't quite made it into the shopping plaza era we know today.

I was back there a couple of years ago and had a look around. It has been extended since we left Liverpool in the 70s but it brought back many memories.Remember a frozen food speciality shop, if thats what you could call it. They sold mainly frozen chips and fish. I think it was call Mac something. And Fosters Menswear upstairs at the top of the escalator on the corner.

John Johnson from Texas recalls West Kirby in the 50`s

We used to live in West Kirby but I used to look forward to getting the Crosville bus from outside the Dee Hotel....
We would get a bus and boat ticket and when the bus got to the Pier Head we would run down the ramp (if it was low tide)and get on the boat .During the War to see the Troop Ships and Cargo ships (the cargo ships would have the holds full and planes lashed down to thier decks)..

I came to Texas in 1963 having worked at Lairds and De Havillands

Joan Irlam (Mills) sent us this e-mail from Austrailia

I used to live off Knowsley Rd Bootle. My Grandad would take my brother and I on the Overhead Railway, to the Pier Head every Sunday morning. I have been back to Liverpool, from Adelaide South Australia 8 times, and never tire of revisting old haunts.
